Understanding Complex PTSD

What is Complex PTSD?

Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) is a psychological condition that develops in response to prolonged, repeated interpersonal trauma, characterized by feelings of entrapment or helplessness. Unlike PTSD, which typically develops from a single traumatic event, CPTSD results from sustained trauma over months or years.

This condition often develops in childhood as a result of severe, prolonged abuse, neglect, abandonment, or other traumatic experiences where a power imbalance prevented escape. However, it can also develop in adulthood from situations like domestic violence, captivity, or cult membership.

Key Symptoms of Complex PTSD

CPTSD shares many symptoms with PTSD, but also includes additional difficulties with:

  • Emotional Regulation: Persistent sadness, suicidal thoughts, explosive anger, or inhibited anger
  • Consciousness: Forgetting traumatic events, reliving traumatic events, or detachment from immediate surroundings
  • Self-Perception: Helplessness, shame, guilt, stigma, or a sense of being completely different from other people
  • Distorted Perceptions of the Perpetrator: Attributing total power to the perpetrator or becoming preoccupied with the relationship to the perpetrator
  • Relations with Others: Isolation, distrust, or repeatedly searching for a rescuer
  • Systems of Meaning: Loss of faith or a sense of hopelessness and despair

Healing and Recovery

Recovery from Complex PTSD is possible. While the journey is deeply personal and varies for each individual, many people find that a combination of professional therapy, medication (in some cases), self-care practices, and creative expression can help in the healing process.

Through my own journey, I have found that channeling trauma into creative pursuits — cooking, music, technology, and art — has been an essential part of my healing. These activities have provided a means to express what sometimes cannot be put into words and have helped me rebuild a sense of self and agency.
